Chase Winovich, who starred as a defensive end and linebacker at Michigan before playing five seasons in the NFL, announced his retirement on Tuesday night.

Winovich made two All-Big Ten teams in 2017 and 2018 and was taken in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft by the New England Patriots.

He led the Patriots in sacks with 5.5 in 2020 while starting nine games that season.

“I consider myself beyond bless and deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to play the game I love in front of so many and on some of the world’s biggest stages,” Winovich said in a social media post announcing his retirement. “To quote my friend Matthew Slater ‘we all owe football something’ and that I certainly do.”

Winovich, 28, played three seasons for the Patriots before being traded to the Cleveland Browns ahead of the 2022 season. He signed a one-year deal with the Texans this offseason but was released before the season.

Winovich made the Miami Dolphins‘ practice squad and appeared in three games before being released last week.
