Jaguars vs. Saints highlights: Jacksonville wins 31-24 on Thursday Night Football

Week 7 of the NFL season began Thursday with the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-2) taking down the New Orleans Saints (3-4) at the Caesars Superdome.

The Jaguars have now won four games straight, including a double-digit win over the Indianapolis Colts last weekend. On the other side, the Saints were previously defeated by the Houston Texans in Week 6.

Jags QB Trevor Lawrence, who was questionable all week due to a left knee sprain, was active and started. Jacksonville signed third-stringer Nathan Rourke from its practice squad to the active roster earlier this week in the event that Lawrence was sidelined.

FINAL: Jacksonville Jaguars 31, New Orleans Saints 24

Jags go to work

The Jaguars came down the field with conviction on the opening possession with the passing game, as Lawrence threw for 60 yards on the drive. On the 10th play of the drive, Travis Etienne ran in a 2-yard touchdown.

Jaguar mistakes

Blake Grupe missed a 51-yard field goal for the Saints, but they got the ball back on the first play of the ensuing drive when cornerback Paulson Adebo stripped the ball from Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk; New Orleans recovered the loose ball, as shown below.

Then the Saints went three-and-out, but the Jaguars muffed the punt, giving the former the ball at the 17-yard line. New Orleans settled for a field goal and trailed 7-3.

Clemson thunder

One play after Lawrence took off for a 26-yard run — and had five yards tacked on thanks to a defensive holding — Etienne ran in a 17-yard score for the Jaguars.

Moving the chains

New Orleans extended its drive late in the second quarter when Derek Carr hit Alvin Kamara for a completion on fourth-and-3, and the running back knifed his way through the Jacksonville defense for a 17-yard gain. The Saints later got another field goal and trailed 14-6.

FAKE PUNT ALERT

Jaguars punter Logan Cooke completed a pass to wide receiver Tim Jones, extending their drive shortly before halftime. Brandon McManus connected on a 43-yard field goal to cap off the drive for Jacksonville.

HALFTIME – Jaguars 17, Saints 6

The Saints possessed the ball for the majority of the first half, but they were out-gained by the Jaguars 226-139 in total yards. As for the team out front, Etienne ran in a pair of scores for Jacksonville.

Right up the middle!

New Orleans converted a fourth-and-1 from its own 48-yard line when Kamara got the call on the run and ripped through the Jacksonville defense for a 17-yard gain. The drive ended with a 42-yard field goal from Grupe.

Pick-Six!

On the third play of the next possession, Carr had his pass tipped by Jaguars cornerback Darious Williams and linebacker Foyesade Oluokun corralled and ran the interception back 24 yards for a touchdown. Jacksonville led 24-9.

When Taysom goes marching in

New Orleans got the ball to the Jacksonville 2-yard line but failed to punch three consecutive runs into the end zone. It finally did so when Taysom Hill got the call, slamming in the goal-line score on the 16th play of the drive. The Saints trailed 24-16.

Tie game!

Jacksonville turned the ball over on downs at the New Orleans 47-yard line, and the Saints capitalized on the auspicious field position.

Carr hit Thomas for a 17-yard pickup, Hill for a 19-yard pickup and then wide receiver Michael Thomas hauled in a 17-yard touchdown near the sideline. The Saints then converted a two-point attempt, tying the game at 24 apiece with 6:38 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Jags strike

Jacksonville and New Orleans each punted, and then the former scored its first offensive touchdown of the second half. Two plays after Jamal Agnew returned the punt to the Saints’ 46-yard line, Lawrence got the ball out to Kirk, who ran around and through the Saints defense for a 44-yard touchdown. The Jaguars led 31-24 with 3:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Jaguars get the stop

New Orleans got the ball into the red zone on the following possession, but Carr was unable to connect with a pass-catcher on four consecutive passes from the 6-yard line. Jacksonville took a knee to end the game.
