New Michigan defensive line coach Greg Scruggs resigned Thursday, five days after being arrested in Ann Arbor for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore confirmed in a statement that he had received Scruggs’ resignation, adding that he could not comment because the situation is “a university matter.”

On March 7, Michigan announced the hiring of Scruggs, who coached defensive line last season at Wisconsin and served as assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets in 2022. He replaced Mike Elston, one of several Michigan assistants to follow coach Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to an Ann Arbor police report, Scruggs was stopped around 2:15 a.m. on March 16 after an officer observed his car stopped in an intersection with the hazard lights on. Scruggs, 33, told officers that he had been at two Ann Arbor restaurants but only had two drinks. He also told the officers he was tired from working late and that he didn’t know the area well.

The 33-year-old went through field sobriety tests and was then arrested.

Scruggs took two tests at the police station and registered blood-alcohol levels of .16 and .17, double the legal limit in Michigan. He was suspended by the program following the arrest.

In a statement Saturday, Moore said Scruggs made “an unfortunate mistake” and “has taken accountability for his actions.”

The Wolverines opened spring practice Monday.
