BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns and running back Nick Chubb have agreed to terms on a reworked contract that will ensure he is back on the team for the 2024 season, a source confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Browns reduced Chubb’s salary cap hit from $15.85 million to $6.275 million and that the running back can earn up to $12.2 million next season based on performance levels he was achieving prior to his season-ending left knee injury last year. Before 2023, Chubb had rushed for more than 1,000 yards in four straight seasons, including a career-high 1,525 yards in 2022.

Chubb had a base salary of $11.8 million for the 2024 season, the final year of his deal, prior to the restructuring.

Injured in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, Chubb underwent a first surgery in September to repair his medial capsule, meniscus and MCL. He underwent another surgery in November to repair damage to his ACL.

The Browns have been hopeful that Chubb, a four-time Pro Bowler, will be able to return at some point during the 2024 season. The injured left knee was the same one he had reconstructed after tearing his MCL, PCL and LCL while at Georgia in 2015.

NFL Network first reported the agreement between the Browns and Chubb.
