Jake Moody missed three of his six field-goal attempts for the San Francisco 49ers, but the kicker ended on a high note. His game-winning 44-yard attempt as time expired sailed through the uprights to give S.F. a 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with Tom Brady on the call.
Star running back Christian McCaffrey only had 13 carries for 39 yards in his first game of the season and his return from Achilles tendinitis, but did most of his damage in the pass game. He hauled in six catches for 68 yards, including one that sparked a pivotal fourth-quarter touchdown drive. George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings also had key contributions, as did rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall with his first career touchdown catch, giving Brock Purdy 353 pass yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
On the other side, a valiant effort from Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers — including a stunningly athletic play in which Mayfield stiff-armed Nick Bosa to keep alive a game-tying field goal drive — fell just short.
