Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reportedly week-to-week with ankle injury

The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t have to sweat out a 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but the back-to-back champs had to sweat over an injury to their star quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes left the game after hurting his left ankle on an incomplete pass on a fourth-down play in the fourth quarter. Carson Wentz replaced him when the Chiefs got the ball back with 5:23 remaining.

Mahomes is considered week-to-week after X-rays on his ankle came back negative, NFL Media reported Sunday.

“It’s not broken, it’s sore,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters.

Following the Chiefs’ win, Mahomes was seen walking with a limp out of the locker room before using a cart to move around the stadium.

On the day, he completed 19 of 38 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. While Mahomes’ performance might not have been the prettiest, Sunday’s win was the 13-1 Chiefs’ most decisive victory of the season.

Mahomes’ counterpart, Jameis Winston, threw three interceptions in the loss, including two in the end zone. Cleveland benched Winston for Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the fourth quarter.

This isn’t the first time Mahomes has dealt with an ankle injury in his career. He memorably suffered a high-ankle sprain in the 2022 divisional round and played through the injury to lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl title.
