Here is what to know about the CFP title oddsboard:
Miami Brings the Storm: As a 7.5-point underdog, Miami did the unthinkable and took down the defending champion Buckeyes. Mario Cristobal & Co. jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first half, spearheaded by a 72-yard pick-six by Keionte Scott — the third-longest defensive score in CFP history. Miami’s win was also tied for the second-biggest upset in the CFP ever by spread (7.5), and largest in terms of difference in CFP rank (9). The Hurricanes will take on the winner of Ole Miss and Georgia in the semifinals. They were +2200 to win the title entering the game.
Ducks’ Defense Quacks: Oregon was favored to beat Texas Tech — it wasn’t favored to blow it out. But that’s what happened on New Year’s Day, with the Ducks shutting out the Red Raiders en route to a 23-0 win. It proved to the Oregon defense that carried the day, forcing two interceptions and recovering a fumble. Texas Tech entered the day averaging 480.3 yards and 42.5 points per game. It finished the day with 215 total yards, and of course, zero points. The Ducks will take on Indiana in the semifinals. They were +550 to win the title entering the game.
Tide Gets Rolled: Who saw that coming? Indiana was a touchdown favorite entering its quarterfinal contest with Alabama, and beat the brakes off the Tide, cruising to a 38-3 victory. Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza was poised and efficient, completing 14 of 16 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns. The Hoosiers’ defense was even better, allowing 11 first downs and 193 total yards to Alabama, including just 23 rushing yards. Meanwhile, IU put up 215 rushing yards. Saturday’s game begs the question, who is beating this Indiana team? The Hoosiers were +240 to win the title entering the game. They get the Ducks next, who they beat 30-20 in Oregon back on Oct. 11.
