The Kentucky Derby is the most wagered-on horse race in the United States, drawing casual bettors and seasoned handicappers alike to Churchill Downs every first Saturday in May. Whether you are new to horse racing or just need a refresher on how Derby betting works, this guide covers everything you need to place your bets with confidence. You can also check out the latest sportsbook promos if you want bonus bets for other sports this weekend.

Betting on the Kentucky Derby is done through horse racing apps, not standard sportsbooks. By law, pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing operates under a separate regulatory framework, which means the bonus bets you earn from a sportsbook welcome offer cannot be used on horse racing. Your real-money deposit, however, can be used across both when platforms offer a shared wallet.

The 2026 Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday, May 2 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The race goes off at approximately 6:57 PM ET.

What Is the Kentucky Derby?

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown, a series of three prestigious races also including the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Run at a distance of 1.25 miles on a dirt track, it is one of the oldest continuously held sporting events in the United States, dating back to 1875.

The race typically features a field of up to 20 three-year-old thoroughbreds, each having qualified through a points-based Road to the Kentucky Derby series. The winner earns the garland of roses and a purse of $5 million. In 2025, Sovereignty won as a favorite, breaking a recent streak of longshot winners.

Where to Bet on the Kentucky Derby

You cannot bet on the Kentucky Derby through a standard sportsbook app. Federal law requires pari-mutuel horse racing bets to be placed through licensed advance deposit wagering platforms, known as ADWs. The major national options for 2026 are below.

One important note before you get started: the free bets you receive when signing up for FanDuel Sportsbook or DraftKings Sportsbook cannot be used on horse racing wagers. You can fund your account with a real-money deposit and use those funds across both products where a shared wallet is available, but promotional free bets are sportsbook-only.

DraftKings Racing and DK Horse

DraftKings expanded its horse racing product significantly ahead of the 2026 Derby, launching DraftKings Racing directly inside the main DraftKings Sportsbook app across nine states. In states where DraftKings Racing is live, existing DraftKings users share a single wallet, meaning no separate account or deposit is needed. DK Horse, the standalone app, remains available in additional states where the integrated product has not yet launched.

  • Best for: Existing DraftKings users who want a seamless single-app experience
  • Shared wallet: Available in states where DraftKings Racing is integrated into the sportsbook app
  • Derby offer: King of the Track, dkhorse.com or racing.draftkings.com. Opt in, place a $5 straight win wager on the Derby winner, and receive a share of $1,000,000 in cash if your horse wins. Reward issued via click-to-claim within 7 days of race completion.

If you are new to DraftKings, check out the DraftKings promo code page to learn more about their sportsbook welcome offer.

FanDuel Racing

FanDuel Racing is available as a standalone app and through the FanDuel Sportsbook app in select states. FanDuel has long offered a shared wallet across its sportsbook and racing products, meaning a single account and deposit covers both. It is one of the most established racing platforms in the US, having absorbed TVG into the FanDuel Racing brand.

  • Best for: FanDuel Sportsbook users and bettors who want live race streaming
  • Shared wallet: Yes, across FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel Racing
  • Sign up at racing.fanduel.com

If you are new to FanDuel, check out the FanDuel promo code page to learn more about their sportsbook welcome offer.

TwinSpires

TwinSpires is the official wagering partner of Churchill Downs, making it one of the most established horse racing betting platforms in the country. It operates as a standalone ADW with no sportsbook component, but its depth of racing content, live streaming, and expert picks make it a top choice for dedicated horse racing bettors.

  • Best for: Experienced horse racing bettors who want deep handicapping tools and track coverage
  • Shared wallet: No sportsbook equivalent
  • Sign up at twinspires.com

BetMGM Racing

BetMGM Racing is powered by NYRA Bets technology and operates as a separate app from the BetMGM Sportsbook. It is currently available in Ohio, Florida, and Louisiana. The two products do not share a wallet, so BetMGM Sportsbook users in those states will need to create a separate BetMGM Racing account.

  • Best for: BetMGM users in Ohio, Florida, or Louisiana who want a familiar brand for horse racing
  • Shared wallet: No, separate account and deposit required
  • Sign up at horseracing.betmgm.com

If you are new to BetMGM, check out the BetMGM bonus code page to learn more about their sportsbook welcome offer.

Can You Bet on the Kentucky Derby with Kalshi?

Kalshi is a federally regulated prediction market platform, not a horse racing ADW. Kalshi allows users to trade on event contracts, including some sporting outcomes, but it does not offer pari-mutuel wagering on horse races. You cannot use Kalshi to bet on the Kentucky Derby.

If you use Kalshi for other markets, you will need a separate account on a licensed horse racing platform such as DraftKings Racing, FanDuel Racing, TwinSpires, or BetMGM Racing to wager on the Derby.

For more information on Kalshi, what you can bet on, and their welcome offer for new users, visit our Kalshi promo code page.

How to Bet on the Kentucky Derby: Step by Step

Once you have chosen a horse racing app and created an account, placing a bet on the Kentucky Derby is straightforward. Here is what the process looks like.

  1. Download the horse racing app of your choice or open the integrated product within your sportsbook app if available in your state.
  2. Create an account and verify your identity. You will need your name, date of birth, address, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
  3. Make a deposit using a debit card, PayPal, online banking, or another accepted payment method.
  4. Navigate to the Kentucky Derby race card. On race day, this will be prominently featured on the home screen of most apps.
  5. Select your bet type (see below), choose your horse or horses, enter your stake, and confirm the wager.
  6. Odds are pari-mutuel, meaning they fluctuate until the race goes off. The amount you win is determined by the final pool, not the odds when you placed the bet.

Kentucky Derby Bet Types Explained

Horse racing has its own vocabulary and betting structure. Here are the main bet types you will find on the Derby.

Straight Bets

Straight bets are the simplest wagers and the best starting point for new bettors.

  • Win: Your horse must finish first. Highest payout of the straight bets.
  • Place: Your horse must finish first or second. Lower payout, more likely to cash.
  • Show: Your horse must finish first, second, or third. Lowest payout, highest probability.
  • Win/Place/Show (across the board): Three separate bets on the same horse covering all three outcomes. Costs three times the base stake.

Exotic Bets

Exotic bets involve multiple horses and offer significantly higher payouts in exchange for more difficulty.

  • Exacta: Predict the first and second place finishers in the correct order.
  • Exacta Box: Cover all order combinations for your two horses. Costs twice the base stake.
  • Trifecta: Predict the first, second, and third place finishers in exact order.
  • Trifecta Box: Cover all combinations for three or more horses. Costs more but increases the chance of hitting.
  • Superfecta: Predict the top four finishers in exact order. Low minimum bets (as little as $0.10 on some platforms) with potentially massive payouts.
  • Daily Double: Pick the winner of two consecutive races.
  • Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, Pick 6: Select the winner of three, four, five, or six consecutive races. Multi-race bets that run through Derby Day undercard races.

Key Horse Racing Betting Differences vs. Sports Betting

If you are coming from sports betting, a few differences are worth knowing before you place your first Derby bet.

  • Pari-mutuel odds: Unlike fixed sports betting odds, horse racing odds are not locked in when you place your bet. They shift as more money comes into the pool, right up until the race starts.
  • Minimum bet amounts: Most bets start at $1 or $2 for straight wagers, and as low as $0.10 for superfectas and multi-race bets.
  • Bet cancellation: Unlike sportsbooks, most horse racing apps allow you to cancel a pending bet before the race goes off. Check the My Bets section of your app.
  • No bonus bets: Sportsbook promotional bonus bets cannot be used on horse racing wagers by regulation. Real-money deposits are eligible where shared wallets apply.

Kentucky Derby Futures Betting

Futures bets on the Derby are available weeks or months before the race, allowing you to lock in a price on a horse you believe will win before the morning-line odds are set. Most horse racing apps offer futures pools, though bets in futures pools are typically final and cannot be canceled.

The trade-off with futures is that odds are often better early, but you have more uncertainty about whether the horse will even make the Derby field. Horses must accumulate enough points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby prep race circuit to earn a spot in the starting gate.

Kentucky Derby Betting Tips

The Derby field is large, the pace is often chaotic, and upsets are common. Here are a few things worth knowing as you handicap.

  • Look at the pace scenario: With up to 20 horses breaking from the gate, the race often favors closers. Horses that prefer to sit off the pace and make a late run have historically done well.
  • Post position matters: The rail (post 1) has been historically difficult in the Derby due to traffic. Mid-pack posts in the 5 to 10 range have had strong records over the years.
  • Do not ignore the prep races: The Kentucky Derby points system rewards winners of major prep races like the Blue Grass Stakes, the Wood Memorial, and the Santa Anita Derby. Recent form in these races is a strong indicator.
  • Beware of heavy favorites: The Derby has a long history of upsets. In 2024, Mystik Dan won at 18-1. Longshots with the right profile (good post, proven pace, sound breeding) can offer excellent value.
  • Box your exotics: For trifectas and superfectas, boxing gives you coverage across multiple finishing combinations. The cost goes up, but so does your chance of cashing.

Responsible Gambling

Horse racing and sports betting should always be approached as entertainment. Set a budget before you bet and stick to it. If you or someone you know is experiencing problems with gambling, these resources are available 24 hours a day.

How to Bet on the Kentucky Derby: FAQ

Can I bet on the Kentucky Derby through a sportsbook app?

No. By law, Kentucky Derby bets must be placed through a licensed advance deposit wagering platform such as DraftKings Racing, FanDuel Racing, TwinSpires, or BetMGM Racing. Standard sportsbook apps like FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook do not offer pari-mutuel horse racing wagers.

Can I use sportsbook free bets on the Kentucky Derby?

No. Free bets and promotional credits from a sportsbook welcome offer are restricted to sports betting markets and cannot be used for horse racing wagers. You can use a real-money deposit on both sportsbook and horse racing where a shared wallet is available, but promotional free bets do not transfer.

What is the easiest bet to make on the Kentucky Derby?

A win, place, or show bet on a single horse is the simplest wager. Win pays the most but requires your horse to finish first. Place pays if your horse finishes first or second, and show pays if it finishes in the top three. These are the best starting point for new bettors.

What is a superfecta and is it worth betting?

A superfecta requires you to pick the top four finishers in exact order. It is the hardest bet to hit but can pay out enormous returns, especially in a large field like the Derby. Most platforms allow $0.10 minimum superfecta bets, which lets you box multiple horses without spending much.

What time does the Kentucky Derby go off?

The 2026 Kentucky Derby post time is approximately 6:57 PM ET on Saturday, May 2. The race is run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky over 1.25 miles on the dirt track. The broadcast begins well before post time with undercard races and coverage starting in the afternoon.

Do DraftKings and FanDuel share a wallet with their horse racing apps?

FanDuel has a fully shared wallet between FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel Racing, meaning one account and one deposit covers both products. DraftKings Racing, the integrated horse racing product inside the DraftKings Sportsbook app, also offers a shared wallet in the nine states where it has launched as of April 2026. DK Horse, the standalone app, operates separately in other states. BetMGM Racing and TwinSpires do not have a shared wallet with a sportsbook.

Where can I watch the Kentucky Derby live?

The Kentucky Derby is broadcast nationally on NBC and Peacock. FanDuel Racing and most horse racing apps also offer live race streaming, including for Derby Day undercard races. DraftKings Racing includes live streaming through its integrated product in supported states.
