The current favorite: Michael Penix Jr.
Just two weeks ago, Penix was No. 1 on the oddsboard, before he was overtaken by Williams after the USC quarterback’s brilliant performance at Colorado in Week 5 (30-for-40 passing, 403 yards, six touchdowns, one interception).
However, the reigning Heisman Trophy wasn’t as sharp in Week 6 during a three-overtime win over Arizona, finishing 14-for-25 passing for 219 yards and one TD. And even though Penix and Washington had a bye in Week 6, Williams’ struggles were enough to give Penix a slight edge.
Skip Bayless, however, isn’t blaming Williams and the Trojans’ struggles this past Saturday entirely on the quarterback.
Could USC’s defense be the weak link in Williams’ back-to-back Heisman campaign?
Through six games, Williams has 1,822 passing yards, 22 passings TDs and one interception. However, the USC defense is giving up 421.3 total yards and 27 points per game, including 82 points in the last two weeks against unranked Colorado and Arizona.
On the year, through six games, Penix has 1,999 passing yards, 16 passing TDs and two INTs.
At 5-0, Washington is No. 7 in the country. At 6-0, USC is No. 10.
